Etsy Returns in Canada: Seller Policies, Exchanges and Purchase Protection

Quick answer: Etsy does not apply one ordinary change-of-mind return window to every item bought by a Canadian customer. The individual seller sets the listing’s returns and exchange terms, and the appropriate starting point is the particular order and seller’s policy. Etsy’s official return and exchange help page explains how to contact the seller and when a separate case process may be available for eligible order problems.

Read the listing, not another shop’s policy

A handmade ring, a vintage garment and a personalized print may come from three separate Etsy sellers with different return conditions. Etsy says sellers are responsible for the terms shown on their listings, including whether they accept returns or exchanges. A seller’s willingness to exchange one colour or accept a cancellation does not establish the same rule for another shop. Go to the original transaction, identify the actual shop and review that listing’s terms before posting a package back.

For an ordinary wrong-size or change-of-mind request, contact the seller through your purchase and agree in Etsy Messages on the item, destination, shipping responsibility and permitted deadline. Do not ship to an address copied from an unrelated listing or assume that Etsy operates a single central Canadian returns warehouse.

Where to find the order and how to request help

Open your Etsy account and locate the order under Purchases and reviews, then select the option to contact or get help with that particular purchase. Include the order number and a concise description of the question: an unopened garment that is too small requires a different explanation from a parcel reported missing or an item unlike its listing photos. Retain the message agreement and carrier tracking if the seller has authorized a return.

If you checked out as a guest, Etsy’s official help information says you need to link the guest order to an Etsy account before opening a platform case. Keep access to the purchase email because it is important for finding the transaction.

What if the parcel did not arrive or the item is different?

These situations are not equivalent to simply disliking an item. Etsy describes a Purchase Protection and case process for qualifying orders that do not arrive, arrive damaged, arrive significantly different from the listing, or meet its specified late-delivery conditions. Its help page says the case option becomes available after contacting the seller and waiting at least 48 hours; other order eligibility rules apply. Review Etsy’s official case instructions for the current steps rather than treating every seller disagreement as an automatic refund.

Hypothetical scenario: You bought a handmade blue scarf but received a red scarf, and the seller’s listing shows the blue item. Start with a message to the seller attaching the order and listing information and, if the seller cannot resolve the concern, consult the conditions for an Etsy case. By contrast, if the blue scarf arrived as described and you simply changed your mind, the seller’s published voluntary return terms are the first commercial reference. This example does not determine any particular order’s eligibility for Etsy Purchase Protection.

Without a paper receipt, with a gift or from an overseas seller

An Etsy purchase is typically documented in the online transaction and email confirmation rather than a standard department-store receipt. Find the purchase record and preserve the seller conversation. A gift recipient without the purchaser’s account cannot assume they can independently initiate an account-based return or refund. Ask the purchaser to consult the original transaction or communicate with the seller about any available gift options.

A Canadian delivery address also does not mean every seller is located in Canada. Check the seller’s listed return address, whether an international return is required and who has agreed to pay carriage before mailing. Avoid presenting a country-specific legal right or postage reimbursement as guaranteed without a reliable source applicable to the actual transaction.

Official support and status

Use the Etsy Help return guidance for the seller-first route and the platform’s How to Open a Case instructions for a qualifying order issue. Both are official Etsy pages; this independent article is not an Etsy customer-service desk and cannot inspect an individual seller’s account or decide a case outcome.

Etsy official help checked 20 September 2026; seller listing policies and order-specific terms can differ.
